Damn, I did a search for a basic movie thread, and we don't have one.
So here it be.
What movies have you been peeping lately?
For me:
Cry Of Jazz (DVD) 1959

My brief thoughts:
INCREDIBLE! A 1959 Jazz-head's thoughts on Jazz being dead! It says its SUN RA - A cry of jazz, but it's really a documentary on the state of Jazz in the late fifties that includes Sun Ra footage.
www.Dustygroove.com thoughts:
Far more than just a DVD with vintage performances by the Sun Ra Arkestra (although that in itself would be great enough!) -- a film essay on the nature of jazz, directed in Chicago in 1959 by Edward O Bland, the only African-American member of the New American Cinema movement, and a pioneering talent who later went onto arrange funk albums in the 70s! The film is incredible -- set as a fictitious discussion between members of a southside jazz appreciation society, as a means of sorting out the differences between "black jazz" and "white jazz" -- and featuring some incredible location footage from the Chicago of the 50s, as a means of illustrating these points! Shots of the Arkestra (playing anonymously) are intercut between the discussion and location shots of the Chicago scene -- making for amazing interplay as the narrative expounds on the different types of jazz, and their relation to African-American struggle and identity. Mindblowing stuff, and a film that's almost never been seen over the years -- equally important to fans of Sun Ra as it is to any follower of underground American cinema! 35 minutes, black and white, and featuring Sun Ra music that's never been issued on record!
and...

Is Rise to Power any good, Uptown? It looked like just another hiphop B-movie to me so I've been stayin away from it.
I watched 'Get Shorty' again the other day, that s**t was still funny. |

^^ You know...i didn't know what to expect with this movie either, but bought this 'cause it was in a double-pack with the first 'Carlito's Way' with Al P...for dirt cheap.
I didn't even know the basis of the movie as I thought it was a just another "hiphop B-movie" too, but..it actually has nothing to do with hip-hop. In fact, it takes place in the 70's as a so-called, prequel to, 'Carlito's way' and how Carlito became "the man". I just thought the spanish kid who played (young) Carlito was not convincing enough to play that role....i feel they should've had someone else with a little more edge and hardness. I think this is a good movie for any fans/buffs of the first movie...to get a background on Carlito, etc. Generously speaking, I'd rate it a 2.8 out of 5. It wasn't good, and it wasn't bad.
Puffy played a role harder than I thought he could play.

Just saw "Friends With Money" which was pretty good. I didn't think I was going to be able to relate but I was surprised. It's got a triple threat going: good actors, good dialogue and good direction.
I also saw "The Da Vinci Code" and I will rerve my thoughts until more people have commented on it. I love Audrey Tautou and have ever since "Amelie" and "Dirty Pretty Things"
Next, I hope to see "Thank You For Smoking". I'm also making time to see some recently purchased DVD's like "The Promise", "Sha Po Lang", "Tom Yum Goong" and "Fearless". |
