i recently had a fight with someone over this. we both said that it wasnt rappers delight by the sugar hill gang like most people think. i thought it was christmas rapping by kurtis blow, but he claimed it was vicious rap by tanya winley. anyone care to settle this?

Rapper's delight was before any of those two, but the first rap-record was "king tim III (personality jock)" by the fatback band.

I know you got fans that's in the house
but you ain't got'em no more 'cause they're my fans now.

No, Rappers Delight was not way before those two. Rappers Delight was released in 1979, Tanya Winley's Viscious Rap was released in 1978, FACT, if you have a copy of Tanya Winley you will see that the label says 1978. This is not really worth discussing as those in the know already realise Tanya Winley was the first. I personally don't count King Tim III (Personality Jock), if you call this rap then we can go back even further and say the Last Poets was before this, not strictly Hip Hop style rap, more spoken word.

Never heard about it being from '78. The scans I've seen say '79. Never heard anyone else mention what you say either (not saying you're wrong). I'f I'm not completely wrong the label to eddie cheba's "looking good" also says '78 when in fact it was released in '79. Maybe this is tha same case, maybe not...anyone got anymore light to shed?

And some says it was 1979 on the label, but released in 1980.....
The only fact I am sure of is that it was the first female mc on record.
Released on Winley records who also had Bambaataa's Death mix and The Super Disco Brake series among some nice classics..

after extensive talks with Mr. Paul Winley I now think it was Vicious Rap
recorded in 1978 released in 1979
BEFORE Sugarhill Gang, King Tim III

I know on this topic we may be talking about the New York or classic Old School Rap sound/style but,......

What about Pigmeat Markham's - "Here Comes The Judge" released on Chess Records 1968 !!!!
If that aint Rappin' then I dunno what is !

Yo,I'm not trying to be clever, but if you know this track then you'll know what I mean...
`Pigmeat Markham` raps in verses and rhymes the punchlines on the end of each sentence, ON BEAT to a VERY funky breakbeat led track...
This FACT is also credited in the classic book "The Rap Attack" by David Toop (1984)..

Definitely the first Rap record!....1968 Y'all !!!! Just ask Bambaataa, He'll tell ya.

As we in the ZULU NATION say:

KNOWLEDGE IS THE 5th ELEMENT OF HIP HOP

Just downloaded it..
MAN! This is incredible!
No doubt that this one fits in the line of Rap styles.
If he did it, how many others ?
I also DL, "Who got the number" Same style.
A true forfather to the Rap style we have today. Reminds me of that 80's Rapper Bipo!
Same singing Rap style.

What's next, an artist from 1950? , hehe
