Poll Question:
How do you rate this? I only recently picked this up as it's one that's always been put aside, but I like it a lot. How did this go down in NY at the time with the B Boys? I can only assume that in the whole scheme of things that the original is the one that still gets things moving, but did this remake do the business back in '84?

One thing I did notice is that the drums are very similar in sound to Renegades Of Funk, you'd think that Arthur Baker was on the mix but of course it wasn't (unless it was uncredited..)

Your thoughts please...

Choices:

Terrible..
So-So
Good
Excellent!
Awesome!!

Not a bad remake. Stayed pretty true to the original. Sometimes I prefer using this version at parties because the remake's easier to mix another record into. When I'm just cutting up breaks, the original is the best.

While it's not as good as the Babe Ruth version I think it's good.

If they did it like they used to, I would still prefer the old school. L.E.S. for life

Yeah, I agree with that, it's like they literally just took the drums out and synced up an 808 to the track from then on. The only thing that I think they could have kept in was the bassline, that's one of the great parts of the original break.

Its good, I heard the vocals 1st as they were sampled in a popular
house record (uk). Is this a freestyle record?

That song is one of the greats
very danceable---breakers used to rock off that joint
also it's one of the early freestyle hits
and last but not least
cant beat the cover

This song got a lot of club play. Jellybean was pretty hot at the time.

I played the acapella over other records a lot too

There is another version of the Mexican by the Bombers from '79 on WestEnd Records that has a superb break midway which incorporates the Fistful of Dollars riff. IMO it is far better than JellyBeans attempt which I think was inspired by this version rather than the original. Another version was recorded a few years ago (their name escapes me).

Just out of interest, here are the lyrics:

Chico Fernandez
Livin' on a gun
Dreams of Santa Anna
Fighting in the sun
Drums so loud from outside
Makes it hard to dream
A rain is fallin' hard and fast
Makes it all seem real
Mornin' come mornin
A Chico's gotta have his share
Mornin', sad mornin'
Said he must be there

Mornin', sad mornin'
What a laugh, and I cried
And I cry, cry, cry, cry, cried

Mornin', sad mornin'

Siņorita pining
Chico come on home
Santa Anna's losing
You'll be first to go
Sam Houston's laughing
Davy Crockett too
When Anna takes the Alamo
The first to go is you
Mornin', come mornin'
A Chico's gotta have his share
Mornin', sad mornin'
Heaven will be there
Mornin', sad mornin'
What a laugh and out loud
Ha ha ha ha ha

The remake was pretty good. B-boys will get off to either version. But for some reason,I think of being in The Roxy or The Danceteria when I hear the remake.

As for the piece sounding the same, it does and Jellybean actually got the original singer(Jenita Haan)to rerecord the vocals.
