The best of the early sheeeeit.
I loved her and the DJ MARLEY MARL..... They hardly put a foot wrong but which was the best....?
Which would you choose as two & 3 too?

HAVE A NICE DAY cos I loved THE BRIDGE WARS and she takes BDP out in less than a verse... "dj scott la rock you should go on vacation with a name sounding like a wack radio station"..."BDP stands for Broken Down Punks"... "When TLA ROCK said IT'S YOURS he didn't mean his name"... Some of her most caustic put downs....
Lovely break too. This was the real start of something and a good indicator of what would later come on her LP.

The beat is so ****ing agro! This is more like a duet cos Marley is at his most ferocious.... This is my fave early example of Marley on the wax from the 80s (beat MARLEY MARL SCRATCH by a hair!) SHANTE snarls and rips sheet up. She sounds tough too, not like a baby like she did on the crush ROXANNE'S REVENGE.... SHANTE takes down RAP PSOTER IDOLS & ROYALTY without batting an eyelid, LL, RUN DMC, KURTIS BLOW, BAD BOYS, SPARKY D all get way layed.....
DEF FRESH CREW
cos it's so funky, innovative, one of teh best early beat box tracks and for most of us, our introduction to the diabolical BIZ MARKIE.... How many of you used to do impressions of this tune in the school yard.... I know I did (still do)! TELL THOSE CRABS THEY SOUND LIKE CATS>>>>MIAOW MIAOW MIAOW......
She almost single-handedly put PHILLY Label POP ART on the map.....
She still is the QUEEN!

'Bite This' wins for me. It's a PERFECT example of mid-80's hip hop, and show's everything I love about the music from that period: tough beat, rough production, a viscious rap, and dope scratching. PERFECT.
'I'm Fly Shanté' comes in at second for me, for much the same reasons as above. A great duet with Steady B, over some of Lawrence Goodman's toughest beats and stabs.
Third is a tricky choice, but I'll give it to 'Def fresh Crew'. it's very funky and raw, and I can imagine the two of them doing it in the school yard or street corner....
I love all the tracks listed though, with the exception of 'Runaway'. And even that has got a good dub mix.
As you say Ed, she's the queen....doesn't matter that Kane and Shan wrote her best lyrics; her delivery was superb, and hard as nails.

First off, all tracks listed are dope!!
I went for 'Bite This', but I class it as joint top with 'Fly Shante'.
Next in line probably 'Queen of the Rox', that track builds up real nice, the cutting up of 'the R O X A N N E' is classic!!

| I saw the JUICE CREW at USA roller skating in Empire BLVD-Brooklyn USA. It was '86 (Jan/Feb)and DEF FRESH CREW WAS THE SH*T!!!!They all rocked that evening, 2nd would be FLY SHANTAE 3rd HAVE A NICE DAY. |

4. Fly Shante (The one that came out on its own to be totally clear, not the one on the Just Call Us Def 12")
5. Runaway
6. Roxanne's Revenge (I only knew this initially for a long time from Electro 6 and I think it was well sped up which didn't sound that good at all)

I chose def fresh crew-
I grew up in North Carolina and when these songs would come down our way I remember getting goosebumps when hearing them for the first time. We just imagined that you would see people just busting out in rhymes in NYC all the time.
I liked songs like Def Fresh Crew, Here we Go because all sounded live and at the time it was the closest I would get to a live hip hop show back in the mid 80's. I remember we would have competitions on who had the best mix tapes that they cousin from UP NORTH sent them.

I more prefer her early tunes for the beats,she sounds to me like shes makin up words or sayin things that dont really make any sense, bad English/Bad slang.
