This is an Old Post that I did on the main boarda while back. It floated away like other many other threads, and was forgotten.
http://oldschoolhiphop.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~10611.asp
When I thought of this I knew frankly it would be a daunting task, but I think if we all work together, we can do this using our various resources...
The Internet...(Google searches...) John G's Current list... -> http://oldschoolhiphop.com/artists.htm Discogs.com Freddy Fresh's Rap Book Our Own Knowledge
JG, your website focuses on all the essential Old School artists. You could have a different page that lists the forgotten, slept on, and underground artists so that this website has the ONLY Complete list of artists from the Old School. If we work together, and correct each other's mistakes and add artists, we will get a complete list. But only as a group effort.
as I said in the link above, John G already got us started. And I got all the A's started, so can we do this? Can we create an all encompassing Old School artist data base that can be Googled? I think we can. It'll definitely get OSHH more hits that's for sure.
Here's the start...
A's
Afrika Bambaata Afrika Islam Afro Rican Connection Ah Boo AJ Les Al B and Just Two MCs Alias III All Ages Band The Alliance of MCs The Almighty ASO Crew Almighty KG The Almighty Three Amazing Kid and Cut Master Lee Angie B Arabian Prince Arthur Armstrong Arthur Baker Awesome Foursome
So whatdya think? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Can we whittle away at this or should I not bother?

| rchecka....I'm feeling you on this....are you looking for cats who only made studio recordings pre-86 or any known artists pre-86 (which would include the pre-wax era and thus make this more challenging and also more obscure)??? |

Thanks MP for the B's! If everyone can grab a letter and start researching that'd be great. Again, we can add and cut names from the list at any time if we make mistakes.
EyeGetz:
Yeah, I agree with JG on this. Its gotta be everyone, even the cats that didn't make it to record. A lot of peeps here know Old School MCs that rocked the mic back in the day, but never got any airplay. Those cats helped lay the foundation too, so if we can conjure a real name, drop it on the list. Evidence to support the name should be there even if its "I know the guy." I doubt we will have to weed out any fake names.
Here's a question:
Should we make an effort to weed out any straight up electro artists? I think so. It may start arguments (nothing new here...) but we should limit this list to MCs and MC crews. An MC that raps over an electro beat is still an emcee and a crew that uses an 808 electro beat is still a valid crew. But a producer with an electro instrumental beat and a simple repetative vocodor rap should be dismissed from the list. GMF and the F5 make the list despite "Scorpio" because they have plenty of Old School cuts that aren't electro. So if a certain artist is predominantly Electro, but is also a legitamate MC can make this list.
Does that make sense? Or is it too argumentative. (f*ck it, everything's argumentative here) What do you guys think about that. I seriously think we should keep this list STRICTLY for MCs and Crews not electro producers. We on the same page?

Ok....Eye kinda figured that was where you guys wanted to go, but the reason why I asked is because asking us to name pre-wax cats who rocked is a bit subjective. I don't think you cats really realize how many crews were out there making noise locally during those times. A lot of them may not have rocked hard outside their respective boroughs though and that brings me to my point. If we are going to list pre-wax cats, then I think it should be cats who were all-city...whose fame and cred reached beyond their home slice of the apple....otherwise, the list becomes much harder to validate....make sense? |

| Definitely need to have some notoriety. I mean I'm sure there were plenty of Grandmaster John G's and MC Rchecka's rhyming and cutting around their basements, but we don't need to list them. |

Gee, that shouldn't take you too long Ed.
mp,
Isn't B+ Electro? I mean strictly electro, no emceeing? If so, exclude that... Exclude Bambaataa as that isn't his last name isn't Bambaataa its listed under the A's.

| B+ is more hip-hop than electro RCHECKA>... It may have a vocoder but those beats are hip-hop funk, it's similar to BEAT BOP only with a vocoder.... And GMM is right, it is SPYDER D, it came out on WEST END RECORDS in 1983.... |

based on the "new rules" i have removed Blackstar (early eighties electro funk artists on Westrock out of la) and Bobby Broom as they are both are more electro funk tunes Yeah when I did that list there were no "rules" as such so just added anything that came to mind. |

the Carver High School Seniors was a school project out of Chicago - later Carver High released a 7 inch on the same label called "boogie with a book"

the cover had pictures of all the kids on the front. There was also a full length LP if I remember correctly - bit of a novelty but worth noting I think. |
