LL COOL J - I NEED A BEAT
BEASTIE BOYS - ROCK HARD / BEASTIE GROOVE
JAZZY J & RUSSELL SIMMONS - DEF JAM / COLD CHILLIN WITH LEROY
HOLLIS CREW - ITS THE BEAT
MCA & BURZOOTIE - DRUM MACHINE
LL COOL J - DANGEROUS / I WANT YOU
JIMMY SPICER - THIS IS IT YALL / BEAT THE CLOCK....

i need to get two of these...... grrr and I never see em. & I want em.

It's a definite must, that I get loose!

The hardest one to find,hmm....
Don`t know how the market is over there.
With the exception of:"Rock Hard" and "Drum Machine" everything else is pretty much available.
I`ve seen re-issues(recently....)of all the rest.

KEEP IT TRUE...KEEP IT REAL...
Peace

It can't be the Jimmy Spicer 12", 'cause I've got it and God knows I don't have any rare records.

I know you got fans that's in the house
but you ain't got'em no more 'cause they're my fans now.

The first Beastie Boys single, “Rock Hard/Party’s Getting’ Rough” b/w “Beastie Groove” (Def Jam, DJ002, 1985) is most likely the most rare to come by. Since the release of the original single, pretty much none of these songs have been re-released or made their way on to any commercial compilations. I know that “Rock Hard” is in perpetual limbo until all the members of AC/DC drop dead because they placed an injunction on the song because it samples from one of their songs. According to one of the group members, “I don’t get this sampling thing.”

As to the two remaining cuts, I guess they must also have some uncleared samples. This is a real shame, because it would be nice if a re-mastered 20th anniversary re-issue with those three cuts as bonus tracks could be released soon, but it is not likely to happen due to assholism. (Apparently, Capitol Records did re-release these songs through its Crown Royal label on the D L circa 1989/90, but if my recently acquired copy is typical then “Beastie Groove” is absent despite being listed on the label; “She’s On It” is pressed in its place.)

Here’s a question about “Beastie Groove” for all the true old heads like myself out there, particularly those from Philly metro who were in earshot of Lady B’s Street Beats radio show on Power 99 FM. About 90% of the time when “Beastie Groove” was aired in Philly it was an extended version of what is on the single. The song starts off with the group arguing with the studio engineers—the skit that is about a third the way into “Party’s Getting’ Rough”—and after the Beasties throw everyone, including Burzootie out of the studio they “hook the bass up” but instead of going to the bass guitar solo as in “Party’s Getting’ Rough” after the “I… I… I… I…” stutter loop it goes immediately into the first verse of “Beastie Groove”.

Was there another version of “Beastie Groove” released in 1985 or was Lady B simply playing a custom mix? I do remember my frat brother having a copy of the Def Jam 12” during the late 1980s, but it had the following track listing:

A1 Rock Hard
B1 Beastie Groove (Vocal)
B2 Beastie Groove (Instrumental)

where the instrumental version of “Beastie Groove” was actually “Party’s Getting’ Rough”.

“That’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.” —Dennis Miller
“Cannot run out of time. Time is infinite. You are finite. Zathras is finite. This is wrong tool.” —Zathras

You don't see any of them around that much. (original pressings that is).

All I can say is that I have been looking for the Hollis Crew 12" for a while and I've never seen it.

Had no bother getting 'Drum Machine' or 'I need a Beat' last year....

Hate to disagree with the mountain of knowledge you have, mdawson, but I've got Rock Hard on a Def Jam compilation that came out in about 87.

I would say that the LL Cool J & Beastie Boys track (never seen that one) are the hardest if your after the originals, but if you don't mind then there all easy except The beastie's track

yeah, 'Rock Hard' is on the Def Jam sampler LP.

ED - you've never heard 'Beastie groove'? It's not bad! I'll have to furnish you with a 'stereo tape'

I'd still really like a copy of the Hollis Crew if anyone can point me in the right direction!
